Peter Schmitt, LMHC, Ed.M, MA
Therapy works by creating an open and non-judgmental environment for clients to begin reflecting on their experiences. By exploring past experiences and working on creating positive change in the present day, therapy can help increase a client’s ability to navigate relationships, understand their emotions and advocate for themselves.
Peter conducts therapy primarily from psychodynamic and emotion-focused approaches. He believes that relationships form the core of our experiences, and as such, the therapeutic relationship is one of the greatest tools of therapy. Peter strives to bring his authentic self into the therapy space as a way of helping his clients do the same.
Through his career, Peter has maintained a focus on working with men and male-identifying clients, queer and non gender conforming clients, clients living with chronic illness, clients facing phase-of-life challenges, as well as young adults working through life transitions. He works extensively with couples, integrating a Gottman-informed approach with his psychodynamic training.
In addition to working with clients, Peter offers clinical supervision to therapists working with individuals and couples, as well as trainings in couples therapy.
